On 27th November 2024 plenary session, Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, representing Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, moved a motion addressing the ongoing metering crisis and related challenges in Nigeria’s electricity distribution sector. The motion underscored the failure of Distribution Companies (DisCos) to replace obsolete meters, as mandated by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and the financial burdens placed on electricity consumers due to inadequate infrastructure.
The House of Representatives adopted the following resolutions:
1.Urge NERC to enforce its directive on meter replacements at no cost to consumers.
2.Mandate the House Committee on Power to investigate DisCos’ non-compliance and assess consumer contributions to repairs.
3.Call on the Federal Ministry of Power to prioritize funding for electricity infrastructure upgrades.
4.Direct DisCos to implement a transparent system for meter upgrades, with penalties for non-compliance.
Hon. Ezechi emphasized the need for transparency and efficiency in the electricity sector, expressing hope that these resolutions will lead to significant improvements for Nigerians nationwide.
