FEDERAL INTERVENTION SOUGHT FOR EROSION CRISIS IN ONYAH COMMUNITY: HON. NNAMDI EZECHI’S MOTION ADOPTED BY THE HOUSE.

In today's 26th September, 2024 plenary, Rt. Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, Member Representing Ndokwa/Ukwuani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, presented a motion urging the federal government to intervene in the escalating erosion crisis that has severely affected Onyah community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Delta State.

In his presentation, Hon. Ezechi detailed the devastating impact of the erosion, which has led to the destruction of homes, schools, markets, and other critical infrastructure, leaving the community on the verge of being completely wiped out. He emphasized the urgency of immediate action to prevent further destruction and displacement of residents.

The motion was adopted by the House, with the following key resolutions aimed at providing relief and long-term solutions for Onyah:

1. The House called on the Federal Government to urgently deploy relevant agencies, especially the Ecological Fund Office, to assess the extent of the erosion and commence emergency remediation efforts to prevent further loss of lives and property in Onyah.

2. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was mandated to provide immediate relief materials such as shelter, food, and medical supplies to the displaced residents who have lost their homes and livelihoods.

3. The House urged the Federal Ministry of Environment to collaborate with the Delta State Government to implement long-term erosion control projects, including riverbank stabilization and flood management systems, to protect Onyah and other affected communities.

4. It was also resolved that Onyah be included in future Ecological Fund projects to ensure comprehensive erosion prevention and mitigation measures are established.

5. The relevant committees on Emergency & Disaster Management, Environment, and Ecological Matters were tasked with regularly monitoring the situation in Onyah, ensuring continued progress on all interventions and support for the community in facing this crisis.
